In 2009, Pulse Tidal deployed the 100kW "Pulse-Stream 100" into the mouth of the River Humber in the UK. We chose this location because the water is shallow - only 9m deep - and therefore relatively easy to work in, and because it is close to shore, where there is a lot of demand for electricity and the grid connection is simple.
The PS100 began generating electricity in May 2009, and we are exporting the power to Millenium Chemicals, a large plant on the South bank of the estuary. We are delighted with the performance of the machine, which has exceeded our expectations. The PS100, which is now approaching 2 years of operation, has proven that our core technology concept - generating power with oscillating hydrofoils - can translate effectively from theoretical models and tank tests to the harsh realities of a high flow, open water environment.
