Great to see HMG announcing £20m innovation funding for the sector today. This is another solid indication of the support we are seeing from UK Gov.

It needs to be partnered with a harmonised UK-wide revenue incentive also if we are going to see tidal power arrays making a real contribution to UK power needs.

Initially, this revenue support needs to be 5 ROCs because tidal power technology is new and relatively expensive, but as the volume of tidal power machines increases, the cost will fall, catching up with offshore wind very quickly. Then there will be no longer any need for differentiated incentives.

When costs are similar, a portolio approach, mixing wind, wave and tidal, saves money overall because the variability of the generation mix goes down. This means that the consumer pays less for their clean power. And that's something we all want.

Progress at Kyle Rhea

Great news that MCT have secured a lease at Kyle Rhea. There is plenty of seabed there for ourselves as well. We are working more to the South of the Kyle, where the water is more shallow and better suited to our fully submerged device.

Thanks for your question Tim. the PS100 has a vertical sweep of 5m. Cut-in velocity is about 1m/s and it will operate in 3m/s.

The bigger, commercial, machine we are working on will have similar cut-in speed, and is able to cope with 5m/s currents. Rated flow speed will be 2.5m/s.

To get the best performance from the machine, we have continuous control over the pitch of the blades. This has advantages beyond controlling the angle of attack - allowing us to adapt to changes in the current profile in the water column, and to shorten the stroke if there is an obstacle approaching. The machine runs well with fixed pitch, but better with variable.
We produced a completion report for the TSB (who provided the grant), but I am not sure about their dissemination policy.

Thanks for the reply - keeping the system operable over a 16-month period is an impressive achievement in itself. I fully understand why you need to keep the release of data limited at the moment. I presume, however, that as you have been receiving grant funding you will have to publish some results in the near future. If that is the case, when can we expect the information to be released?
On a separate matter, I'm interested as to the method you're using to control the angle of attack of the hydroplane to allow for the variation in current velocity as well as the (near) vertical velocity component of the oscillating hydroplane. Have you managed to operate with a simple system, accepting the imperfections in optimising lift at all parts of the cycle, or are you obliged to have a constantly variable pitch with a form of closed-loop control?
